Who We Are
Groveland Food Shelf is a non-profit providing emergency groceries for those in need. The Food Shelf operates two programs: Groveland Emergency Food Shelf and Groveland Food for Youth. Between the two programs, about 1,200 clients are served per month and over 25,000 pounds of food are distributed. Approximately 70% of that food is purchased. The remainder is breads, pastries and some produce.
Groveland Emergency Food Shelf
- Part of the neighborhood food shelf system in Minnesota.
- Serves about 1,000 client visits per month.
- Provides over 20,000 pounds of food each month.
- Nearly 20% of clients seen are of retirement age and have few options to increase how much money they have available.
- Saw an increase of 42% in visits in 2008 over 2007. Closer to 70% increase during the second half of 2008.
Groveland Food for Youth
- Serves youth to age 23 who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Most stay in the Minneapolis / St. Paul metro area.
- Serves between 175-200 youth visits per month.
- Provides nearly 5,000 pounds of food per month.
- Unfortunately, many of these at risk youth also have children.
- 1 out of 6 schoolchildren in Minneapolis goes hungry every day.
- Groveland serves 1000 recipients a month with emergency food supplies. .
- Nearly half of food shelf clients are working poor: 47% of households using food shelves report that paid employment is the family's major source of income...
